Board refers donations restrictions motion

At it’s TDSB  Regular Meeting on Wednesday  September 5, 2012 trustees referred a motion* submitted by Trustees Elizabeth Moyer and Sam Sotiropolous) to prohibit union contributions to trustee campaigns for election.  The board’s  Planning and Priorities Committee will debate the motion at its upcoming meeting, Sept 24 (Monday) 7pm.  (Give P&P your opinion on this#)

*Whereas, the City of Toronto may, by bylaw, prohibit a corporation that carries on business in
Ontario or a trade union that holds bargaining rights for employers in Ontario from making a contribution to or for any candidate for an office on City Council; and
Whereas, the City of Toronto’s elections website lists individuals and organizations that may not
contribute to a municipal campaign; and
Whereas, the City of Toronto Bylaw 1177-2009 bans corporate and trade union donations;
Therefore, be it resolved that the Director look into the interpretation with the City of Toronto
Election Services and present a report as whether the Board can request a ban on trade union donations under the City of Toronto Act.
